Team News: Tristan Nunez to Compete in Prototype Lites at Petit Le Mans
15-year-old Floridian competing in second series event at Road Atlanta
September 22, 2011 – After fielding numerous phone calls and offers for upcoming events, current Skip Barber Summer Series championship point leader Tristan Nunez has confirmed his participation in the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship Series event at Petit Le Mans. Taking place on the same Road Atlanta circuit that he was victorious at earlier this year, Nunez will compete with the Performance Tech Motorsports squad in his second career series start.
“I am really excited to be back behind the wheel of these incredible cars,” expressed Nunez after confirming his participation in the Petit Le Mans weekend. “Having the opportunity to partner with Performance Tech Motorsports is an instant chance to score race wins and podiums in this week’s event.”
“We are very happy to have Tristan back in one of our cars as we feel that he is one of the rising stars in American motorsports,” explained Performance Tech Motorsport Team Owner Brent O’Neill. “Having been in one of our cars before and just narrowly missing the win at Sebring, we feel that he will be a threat for victory in Atlanta.”
Nunez has been in the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship Series cars on two previous occasions at the Sebring International Raceway. In February of this year, the former karting champion completed the official two day winter test and was in the top three in each and every on track session.
With his head turning lap times and the support of sponsor Florida Surgical, Nunez was able to compete in the 12 Hours of Sebring event weekend. Setting a record for being the youngest driver in IMSA Lites history, Nunez also became the youngest driver ever to score a podium result in his first career event with an impressive second place result. Looking to improve one podium step in race two, Nunez was forced to retire from the event due to unfortunate contact.
Nunez continued, “Road Atlanta is one of my favorite facilities and it has been kind to me this year. Claiming back-to-back wins in the Skip Barber Summer Series, I am hoping that I can continue my Road Atlanta success and take home my first win in the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship Series.”
Nunez and his Performance Tech Motorsports squad will hit the track Tuesday, September 27 and Wednesday, September 28 for official test sessions. With qualifying taking place on the morning of Thursday, September 29, wheel-to-wheel racing action will take place that afternoon with race one while race two will take place on Friday morning.
