Team News: Tristan Nunez Signs With Performance Tech for 2012
October 26, 2011 - After three podiums in four events in the 2011 Prototype Lites series as well as becoming the 2011 Skip Barber Summer Series champion, Floridian Tristan Nunez is pleased to announce his 2012 plans. With a schedule that will see the teenager crisscross the country, Nunez will join Performance Tech Motorsports on a full-time basis in the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Series Powered by Mazda with the hopes of continuing his string of success and garnering the end of the year championship.
"I am really happy to have next year's plans figured out so soon," expressed Nunez from his home in South Florida. "I had a lot of different opportunities and I am confident that we chose the right path to head down. I have always had a dream of becoming a professional driver in the American Le Mans Series and this is a great stepping stone for me to achieve that goal."
Kicking off the season in March, Nunez will look to start the championship off on the right foot with his first full-time event at the 12 Hours of Sebring, in his home state of Florida. From there, Nunez will compete at Miller Motorsports Park, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Mosport International Raceway, Road America and Road Atlanta.
With Performance Tech Motorsports, there is a ladder system in place within the team, as they currently own one LMPC car and hope to have another before the start of the 2012 season. Tristan will have the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the bigger and faster machine in testing for American Le Mans Series events.
"The entire Performance Tech team is excited about having Tristan sign with us for 2012 season. He ran two races with us this season and was a bridesmaid both times," explained Team Owner Brent O'Neill. "We won the driver's championship in 2009 but not the team championship and we will be looking for both Championships next year. Tristan will fit right in to the Performance Tech ladder system - we will be testing throughout the year in the LMPC car and we will look to have Tristan in that car for the 2012 Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta."
Not only has Nunez signed with Performance Tech Motorsports, the future champion has also joined forces with AT&T to help spread the word on their "Txtng & Drivng...It Can Wait" campaign. Attending his first promotional event this weekend, Nunez will help raise the awareness on the dangers of texting while driving at the Pre-Halloween Safety Fair and Game Day in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Joining forces with the Dori Slosberg Foundation, State of Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Highway Patrol, Geico and Enterprise at the Safety Fair, Nunez will have handouts, brochures and statistical information on the AT&T no texting and driving program.
Nunez continued, "I am glad to also join forces with AT&T. As a young driver that is just now getting his license, I can understand the dangers of texting and driving. The distractions in a street car are substantial compared to driving 150 miles per hour on a controlled racetrack and a split second can be the difference between life and death. I am out to raise awareness about the risks of texting and driving and promote 'safety comes first' when you're in the driver's seat."
Tristan Nunez would like to thank all his sponsors and supporters for a successful start to his motorsports career. A big thank you goes out to his Uncle Jim as well as the Skip Barber Racing School, Jonatan Jorge, JJRD Team and staff, Race Tech Development, Derek Bell, Jay Howard, Performance Tech Motorsports, Kayla Graham Racing, Homestead Karting as well as all his family and friends.
